War Affected Families Protection and Empowerment Program
Project Timeframe: 2024

By early 2024, up to 150,000 Gazans had found themselves stranded in or evacuated to Cairo. The most common reasons for becoming stranded included seeking medical treatment, bringing children for the beginning of the school year, work obligations, or visiting family and friends. These individuals may have planned temporary stays but became trapped due to border closures or other logistical issues. Some individuals managed to evacuate Gaza, either using personal funds, borrowing from friends or family, relying on fundraising efforts, or receiving assistance from charitable organizations. These evacuations were often undertaken in haste, leaving many without solid plans for long-term stability. Severe medical cases have prompted many Gazans to seek treatment in Cairo. While some received the necessary care, they were often left without support once discharged, forcing them to fend for themselves.
To address the immediate needs, DSG implemented the War Affected Families Protection and Empowerment Program. It was a 5 month program where 43 families received rent relief, food supplementation in the form of food vouchers to major supermarket chains, hygiene kits, and apartment essentials such as fridges, stoves, mattresses, fans, water filters, and washers. Food vouchers were one of the most welcomed forms of food aid because it allowed families the flexibility to supplement the more common food box parcel that is typically received from other organizations. Apartment essentials were also deemed necessary for quality of life as most of these families could only afford to rent unfurnished apartments leaving them sleeping on the floor without means to cook or store their food. This project gave recently displaced families a respite to breathe, heal, and plan for next steps in life. Although this project ended in 2024, a more extensive version is in operation from mid 2025-mid 2026.
